Backgroud

The evolving global financial landscape is increasingly impacted by climate change, necessitating a strategic alignment of banking practices with principles of sustainability and resilience. As the urgency to address environmental challenges intensifies, the banking sector finds itself at a pivotal moment, tasked with the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations into its core operations. This integration represents a significant shift towards recognising the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and ESG performance, not only as ethical imperatives but also as crucial components of financial viability and risk management. The intricate relationship between CSR activities, access to capital, and credit risk underlines a broader transformation in banking practices. By exploring the impacts of climate regulations, CSR strategies, and ESG performance on financial accessibility, creditworthiness, and lending dynamics, this workshop aims to shed light on the vital role of sustainable banking in mitigating climate risks and fostering a more resilient financial system

Goal/Rationale

The paramount goal of this workshop is to address the critical challenge of integrating sustainability and climate resilience within banking practices, a necessity highlighted by the escalating climate crisis and its potential repercussions on the global financial system. As banks navigate the complexities of incorporating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria, the question of how these practices influence credit access, risk assessment, and overall banking operations becomes increasingly pertinent. Recent advances in sustainable finance have demonstrated that effective CSR and ESG strategies can significantly enhance a firm’s access to capital, while also mitigating credit risk through improved operational resilience and reputation. However, the translation of these strategies into practical banking operations, particularly in the face of evolving climate regulations and the need for robust risk management frameworks, remains a challenge. This workshop aims to convene scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to explore innovative approaches to embed sustainability into the fabric of financial institutions, examining the latest methodologies for assessing and managing the impact of ESG factors on creditworthiness and lending practices. By doing so, it seeks to contribute actionable insights towards achieving a sustainable and climate-resilient banking sector.

Call for Papers

The main goal of the workshop “Finance in the Age of Environmental Risks and Sustainability” is to generate an intense exchange of ideas and discuss topics related to the nexus between Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance and Banking. This workshop invites contributions that dissect and discuss the multifaceted relationship between sustainable banking practices and climate resilience. We are particularly interested in research that covers specific themes such as the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance on credit access and risk, the role of sustainable finance in enhancing financial accessibility for environmentally impactful firms, and the implications of climate change regulations on banking strategies. Additionally, we welcome insights into how ESG policies influence lending dynamics, the effect of a firm's sustainability activities on its banking relationships and debt costs, and the evaluation of a firm's creditworthiness through ESG metrics. Studies examining the differentiation in bank loan strategies towards polluting versus non-polluting firms and the integration of physical and transition risks into banking risk management strategies are also of interest. Participants are encouraged to explore these themes, contributing to a holistic understanding of sustainable banking's role in a changing climate.
